What To Expect From Your Sports Medicine Doctor Appointment

Dr. Gustavo Reque Rydberg

Dubai, UAE : What are some of the main conditions treated by Sports Medicine specialists? Dr Anna Zickerman, Sports medicine specialist and Founder of UPANDRUNNING explains:

The clinical discipline of Sports Medicine particularly relates to conditions of the muscles, skeleton, joints and tendons, and the beauty of our job is the variety of conditions we see. We treat certain patients with very complex symptoms where nothing quite makes sense. These patients have usually seen three or four different doctors, and no one has been able to give them answers. We also see simple aches and pains where we just need to advise and reassure. The scope of conditions we see is vast. Some of the main ones include neck and back pain, shoulder issues, knee pain and also elbow symptoms.

We also see patients who are trying to improve their performance and want to have fitness tests, sports massages and targeted training sessions. We also work with patients with medical conditions to help their vital signs and blood levels improve also through specialised exercise programmes.

What happens at the appointment with a Sports Medicine Doctor?

It’s important to understand the patient’s expectations, such as if they have a sporting event coming up or if their issue is impacting their daily life and work. We use pain scales to monitor their pain closely along with what restrictions they have.

We look at lifestyle, family history, previous injuries (that could have an impact), and then go on to do an examination. For this, we certainly look at the affected area, but also consider the body as a whole and how different areas impact on each other, referred to as the ‘kinetic chain’.

A lot of time is dedicated to educating the patient so that they understand the body and how it works. We see many issues that are biomechanical, where there’s imbalance.

As an example, somebody who trains but sits for long hours may find that over time certain muscles will shorten whilst others will lengthen and lose strength, which causes adaptations in posture. This then compromises certain structures and leads to things like impingement in the shoulders. This can be fixed by simply reminding them to correct and improve their posture rather than needing aggressive intervention.

At UPANDRUNNING we want to provide a more holistic approach for long-term gain. It’s like making an investment now so that patients do better long-term. We also follow strict evidence-based protocols and step up treatments according to how the patients respond, usually starting with a very conservative approach and only investigating if it is clinically indicated, if the patient does not respond as we expect, or if the results will streamline the treatment plan.
