As an avid golfer, you already know that you can enhance your game by spending time on the
putting green and driving range. An expert golf physio will tell you that ‘you are what you do most. But did you know that you can improve your game even further by practicing some simple yoga postures? Yoga not only assist with mental and physical conditioning, but it gives you the tools to generate more power, speed, consistency, balance and concentration, all fundamental components that effect your golf performance.

5 WAYS PRACTICING YOGA CAN HELP IMPROVE YOUR FUNDAMENTAL GAME

Minimizes the risk of injury

Strong core muscles are required to stabilize your spine. The intrinsic one-sided repetitive
motion of a golf swing requires good rotational control. Practice spinal rotations, cat and cow
pose to develop upper body mobility and release the stress through your spine.

Promotes an ethos of symmetry

Symmetry of movement and flow ensure that all yoga exercises are practiced equally in both
directions. Any off centered stance or imbalance in your posture could affecting the centering of
your swing.  A stance that is off center can affect the under or over playing of your swing, and
hence affect accuracy.

Improves balance & flexibility

Stability and balance ensure that you are securely grounded, and your feet are better planted to
control those one footed shots from the rough! A lack of stability and balance can cause a
physical limitation to your golf swing. A typical swing involves you shifting your weight from the
back leg to the front leg, a golfer who doesn’t demonstrate great balance will not have the
optimum swing transfer of power from the push off leg to follow through. Likewise, with flexibility, especially through the hips, an increase level of flexibility allows you to channel rotation and
power to hit a longer drive.

Expands concentration

You can play 18 holes and still have capacity to play more!  Yoga uses breath as vital energy.
Not only does it calm your mind and improve concentration but allows you to relax through the
swing and ultimately conserve energy.

Builds muscle to increase strength

The forward swing uses over 22 muscles and flowing through yoga postures which challenge
several muscle groups to work better together and support your body weight can only ensure a
positive outcome.

Olivia Jackson, LPGA Teaching Professional at the Peter Cowen Academy based at Emirates
Golf Club agrees in the importance of yoga to support golfing performance. Olivia cites flexibility as one of the three key elements that needs to be considered to achieve consistency and enhance performance.

“Though some of us naturally are more flexible than others, flexibility can be achieved quickly
and effectively through the practice or some basic yoga and stretching exercises. Flexibility is
an essential element of your swing, in order to achieve control and accuracy across a range of
swing positions for consistency.”
