DOES RUNNING CAUSE YOU BACK PAIN?

Paul Cheung, Chiropractor

Do you experiencing back pain or aches whilst running?

Does it ease when you alter your stride length, or change the pace that you run at? Does the problem disappear when you stop and stretch? Then when you carry on, does the pain come back again?

To summarize your pain levels:

  • Discomfort and or pain that comes and goes indicates there is some form of mild
dysfunction in the back muscles and mechanical motion of the facet or sacro-iliac
    joints.
You could run through it to get home.
  • Persistent discomfort or pain indicates that the mechanical issue has probably
worsened, and the area cannot recover naturally. There is a likelihood of
    inflammation too.
    You have to limp home.

In either case, we recommend that you book an appointment with either a chiropractor or osteopath for a full musculoskeletal assessment to restore functionality and get back to running pain free.
